Wednesday’s Playoff hopes dropped by Adamson!

Dan Hammond
Season ticket holder for 12 years. Been watching Wednesday since 1985. Spent 2 years - 1999-2001 - editing the Sheffield Wednesday fanzine Spitting Feathers and the next 5 years contributing regularly to Out of the Blue. Many people have chosen to take great offence at what I have written in the past and most just aren't clever enough to see when a piece has been written simply to create interest and discussion. Quite often they mistake what I say for what I believe.
Has there ever been a more telling, pivotal moment in Wednesday’s season than the return of Iain Turner to Everton? Upon arriving on loan he helped the club to put together an 11-match unbeaten run including 5 wins in a row. It was clear for all to see that the confidence gained from having a sound last line of defence was spreading throughout the team and they were beginning to take on the appearance of a club that would not be beaten and the players seemed to believe that they would win every time they went out on the field.
Sadly, the loan spell came to an end and Turner went back to Everton. What we were left with was a goalkeeper who surely has to rate as the WORST keeper ever to make the grade as a professional. Talking to a colleague on Tuesday I stated that we had no chance against Birmingham because Adamson was going to be in goal. Sure enough, I turned the radio on midway through the second half and soon heard the words “Adamson went for the cross and dropped it leaving an open goal for Birmingham”. Birmingham scored and we lost! Far be it from me to say I told you so but I did!
I have watched this talentless waste of space warm up many times at Hillsborough and wondered how the hell he made it as a professional and who the f**k saw anything in him to warrant such status. It is clear to anyone who has played in goal that Adamson is useless. He has no agility, no positional sense, no confidence, his handling is dire, his presence non-existent and his athleticism leaves so much to be desired it is untrue. It really does beggar belief that this man plies his trade as a footballer. He inspires so little confidence in both supporters and players and he lacks so many of the fundamentals required to make a decent keeper that it was inevitable that our (slim) playoff hopes would disappear the moment this numbskull was restored to the side. I have been quietly impressed so far with Laws’s management, but if he seriously thinks that Adamson has any value to our team whatsoever then I worry for our club’s future. Adamson, and Adamson alone, has ended our hopes of making the playoffs and I for one hope that the supporters never forgive him for this. He is an insult to anyone who has ever played the game and that he takes payment for his ineptitude is a disgrace. I hereby call on all Owls fans to give this talentless nobody a real rough ride during the last home game of the season. He needs to know that such mediocrity will not be tolerated at our club.

While i understand that you write things to create debate, I feel your being a little harsh to be honest Dan. While i agree with you that Adamson is far from a dependable keeper, i dont believe that he, and he alone should carry the can for us failing to make the play-offs. Lunt should carry some blame as he missed a great chance at 0-0. Why didnt Maclean lunge himself at Burtons cut back? Why didnt Tommy Spurr sort Larsson out before the penalty area was even in sight for the Swede? To suggest we target Adamson for the final game of the season on Saturday is near on obsurd. Come on Wednesday fans lets show the club that this season has been an enormous step in the right direction, and that next season promises to show that the club can make a real impact in the Championship.

I agree about Adamson's failings and I can't see BL keeping him on next season. However it it absurd to use next sunday's game for a demo against one player. Let's end the season on a positive note and rather than blast one player, salute all the others plus BL and PS (sadly departed) who have given us long suffering supporters something to really look forward to next season even though it does not look like we will have chance to stick one on the "Blunts" for next season at least or Leeds disunited for that matter.

Whilst I can sympathise with both respondants and accept that they may feel others were equally to blame for Saturday's terrible result, I think that they are missing the point. Correct me if I'm wrong Dan but I think what you were getting at was that Adamson simply isn't good enough to warrant a place in any football side. If that is what you were hinting at then I am in total agreement with you he is an insult to our team and our fans. To suggest that we should use the last game of the season for some kind of witch hunt is ludicrous, however.

I have to agree that Adamson is simply not good enough, and I can only presume that his wage is so minimal that Wednesday can afford to keep him on the payroll just for desperate measures. At least Laws is targetting a quality goalie as his main priority. It was unfortunate that Turner was recalled, but its been downright negligence to start so many games this season with Tommy Spurr at left back. The poor lad is not ready yet and has been consistently targetted by opposing teams. This has been a massive weak spot ever since we lost Bougherra who's pace was covering up the cracks.

whos worse though him or Ola Tidman, both in my opinion are the worst keepers SWFC has ever employed. We would have been better keeping hold of King Kev for a few more years, but i persume that was Turners fault not Laws or evens Sturrock

Fair enough to slag someone off and voice your opinion, but to call someone a numbskull and abuse them like you have ain't on.
Grow up man. |
